Project Descriptions
Architecture is a social art. At its heart are the people who inhabit the spaces we design. Great design can improve people’s lives and the value of architecture in forming positive communities cannot be under-estimated.
One of the most important elements of great architecture is the ability to capture the essence of place- the site physical environs, climate, people, culture, access — all of these must be carefully considered when deciding how and what will be built.
Passive solar design is a simple but very effective way of creating a high performance and comfortable building by following principles which have long been proven to create optimum interior climatic conditions without the need for excessive and power hungry heating and cooling.
Designing for the Queensland sub-tropical climate is a joy as there are so many great ways on merging the inside with the outside and making flexible spaces for different times of the year.
The Process
When I embark on a project, I will firstly dissect the client brief to really understand the why, how, who and where of the project. Why is this building being built- who is it for- when will it be occupied- how will it need to change over the next 50 years?
Then I will develop a concept with the client that captures the essence of the brief. My preference is to remain involved in the project from inception to completion.
Other consultants will be required and I can recommend talented consultants that I have worked with on previous projects to join the team. These projects are team efforts and every link in the chain needs to have the essence of the design in mind while design issues and problems get solved as they arise.
I generally recommend that the process be split into the following stages:-
- Pre design + briefing
- Concept Design
- Project Cost review
- Design Development
- Tender Documentation
- Tendering / D&C construction
- Contract Administration during construction
- Post contract defects inspections
Depending on the client and project, some of all of these stages can be included.
Fees are calculated on a case by case basis. I will meet with the client to understand the project requirements and then can provide a fee proposal split into the above stages.
Architecture should delight and make people feel that the space they are inhabiting has been designed with them in mind.
