Project Descriptions
Interior Design is so integral with architecture and is most successful when the two interact and flow effortlessly.
People are tactile beings and the touch and feel of different materials has a huge impact on our enjoyment of spaces. A cold floor can be refreshing in the heat of summer but unwanted with bare feet in winter. Daylight and fresh air are essential to our health and well being and need to be well considered during the whole design process.
Material selections need to complement the architecture and re-inforce the design brief and essence of the project.
Low and zero VOC materials are available to ensure the interior is sustainably designed and no harmful off gassing will be occurring.
Practicalities and ergonomics are crucial in designing furniture and spaces that are attuned the human scale, dimensions and comfort characteristics we require. Colour and material selections also create moods and the aesthetic look and feel.
We can learn a lot from boat and small space design — the interiors of boats manage to locate most household requirements in a fraction of the space we insist we need for everyday living. The small house movement can provide much inspiration on how to downsize and select what we really need in our spaces.
Commercial and office spaces are going through major changes as companies adapt to flexible hours, working from home, hot desking and remote access to main cloud based data bases.
It is an exciting time to be working in the design industry.
The Process
The interior design needs to be developed parallel with the architectural design. Ideas will flow from the interiors affecting the external design- and the architecture will also impact the interior spaces. The most successful designs are created in these conditions.
The brief will be developed and refined with the client and spatial allocations for different uses will be discussed in detail. Flow and relationships between spaces needs to be understood so compatible spaces are located close to each other and areas requiring separation or distance are properly located.
Similarly to the architectural process, I generally recommend that this be split into the following stages:-
- Pre design + briefing
- Concept Design
- Project Cost review
- Design Development
- Tender Documentation
- Tendering / D&C construction
- Contract Administration during construction
- Post contract defects inspections
Fees are calculated on a case by case basis. I will meet with the client to understand the project requirements and then can provide a fee proposal split into the above stages.
Great interior design should allow flexibility and future proofing to be able to change and adapt without having to demolish and re-build.
